Book Review: Dear John

Dear John by Nicholas Sparks

I started listening to this book on CD and was immediately hooked. The writing was intriguing and the person reading the book only made it more real. The voice was perfect for this book. The southern twang made it feel like real people might have been talking.

As for the story it was good. I haven't read a lot of Nicholas Sparks before now and this made me want to get many more books on CD from him. The idea that two people meet and have a great connection and work hard to stay together through distance and time. But things sometimes get in the way of true love. Do they belong together? Do they belong apart? Can you really know someone when you spend so little time actually together?

I also found the fact that the book is written in the male perspective - interesting. Most of the time things that I think of as romantic (and this book is romantic) are written in the female voice. But not this one - and I don't think that takes away any of the appeal for women to read it.

This book puts it all together - 9/11, war, love, romance, doing what is right in a package that I think anyone would like.

As a side note I have been noticing commercials for the movie coming out. This book makes me want to see it!

Book Review: Vision in White

Vision in White by Nora Roberts

Description:
Mac Elliot learned early in life to not depend on her parents. So instead her life revolves around her best friends - they are her family now. And the four women have taken their love of weddings (and their own skills and talents) to create Vows - one of the premiere wedding planning companies.

Being around weddings though doesn't mean you believe in Romance. And for Mac that is especially true (what do you expect when her mother has been married three times and her father several as well). When she meets Carter Maguire though she can't help but be smitten by him.

He is totally not her normal type. He is sweet and romantic and likes her from the beginning. Can Mac learn to not screw this relationship up like she has all the rest?

Thoughts: Sometimes I feel like a Nora Robert's groupie. I love her stuff whether it is J.D. Robb or Nora Roberts. When I see a new book come out I just get excited because I know that more often then not I am going to love the characters and the plot. And this one to be about weddings! Just made me even more excited. Almost wish that I was back at the planning stages of my own wedding (then again maybe not - if I could have hired someone to do all the work for me then maybe...)

I really loved Mac and Carter both. They both were just the right combination of cute and not perfect to make me happy. And the other girls that are in the story seem so likeable I hope the rest of the books in the series come out quickly.

It just leaves me wondering who will end up with Jack and Del. It has to be one of them !

Book Review: Sunset Bay

Sunset Bay by Susan Mallery

Description: Megan has it all. A father who dotes on her. A wonderful cardiologist fiance. A great successful job. Then one day things start to fall apart. The men in her life which were her backbone start to disappoint her and she just doesn't know if she can recover. Add to that a mother who is incredibly needy and a sister who seems to never be there for her (or could that be more of Megan's portrayal then the truth)?

Megan has great friends though and they are going to help her through it all. When bad boy Travis reenters her life she can't help but be attracted to him just like she was when she was a teen. Many bad things have happened to Travis and he isn't the nice guy that she thought he was back then - or is he? He has returned and there is more to him then meets the eye.

Thoughts: One of my favorite things about Susan Mallery books is her insite not only into people's romantic relationships but their relationships with their families. Many times her book is as much about the bonds between sisterhood or with their parents as it is about finding the person you are meant to be with. For me that was especially true in this book.

In some ways this book is about Megan finding herself and doing what she wants with her life - not so much about the romance between her and Travis. The romance is still a big part of things - but less so then the other things that are going on in her life - job, marriage, family etc.

I hope there are more in this series and we can see even more of Megan in the future.

Book Review :What Would Jane Austen Do

What Would Jane Austen Do by Laurie Brown

Description:Eleanor travels to England to pursue her dream - historical clothing. When she stays at an inn she has stayed at before she is relegated to the tower room which is supposedly inhabited by ghosts. And what does she find? The ghosts themselves. They are two sisters that need her to go back in time to prevent a dual that killed their brother.

The next thing Eleanor knows she is back in the Regency era - living in the same house as the living, breathing versions of her ghosts. There is more behind the scenes then meets the eye with this family.

It gives Eleanor the opportunity to meet a man and fall in love with someone who is a true hero - even if it means leaving him behind when she returns to the present. It allows her to meet her very own favorite author - Jane Austen. The experiences that she has she would never give up. But she can't be distracted by all of that - she has a job to do as well!

Thoughts: What an adorable book. I have read Jane Austen books but wouldn't consider myself a Jane Austin-ophile. So while the premise of this book was interesting to me - I didn't anticipate that it would grab me and make me want to keep reading like it did.

Really Laurie Brown took a story that would be otherwise engaging and added a touch of a literary heroine to it in order to bring it together in even a better way. Yes, if you expect it to be mostly about Jane Austen you would be disappointed - but the story gives you so much more it is great.

You don't know who the man is that Eleanor is to save. Is the good guy the man that she is attracted to and can't help but be attracted to him either? Especially if he can't remember where he came from? Or is the guy the brother of the sister's that sent her back in time? It all is a fun story that keeps you intrigued. I also love that how with most time travel romances - the heroine either has no clue what to do - or seems to know exactly what to do. With this story it is all explained by the heroine's love of Jane Austen. Her books taught her so much about life lessons and other things that she knew what was acceptable and what wasn't.

A wonderful happy ending story that I highly recommend!

What I did for Love

What I did for Love by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Description: Georgie York was one of a famous teenage couple on TV. She was America’s good girl and they loved her for it. The years since have been hard on Georgie. She hasn’t become the actress that she always wanted to be – with big meaty roles. She was in a relationship with a very famous actor – but he just left her for another woman who saves the world (as well as having the parts that Georgie always wanted). Georgie is in a spiral and she can’t keep the paparazzi away from her.

Bramwell Separd was the other half of America’s favorite couple. He was a hard partying, womanizer when he was on the show and is the reason the show was cancelled. Georgie and Bram have never gotten along. When a night of drunkenness puts Bram and Georgie into a situation where they find themselves married –neither knows what to do. Staying married so as to not put their careers in further jeopardy might be the only choice.

Neither of them are the same people they were when they knew each other as teens. But what does that mean for their relationship?

Thoughts:
For me the comparison between good girl married action movie star who leaves his wife to go off with a do-gooder actress actually made me compare it to real life stories. And that made everything a little more realistic.

I love the idea of a teenage golden couple who hated each other falling in love.

The acting world is portrayed wonderfully in this book. It isn’t all good parts. It is bad agents, overprotective parents, lies and paparazzi. But it is all told without getting too depressing.

I found this book to be really great. I love Susan Elizabeth Phillips,

Talk Me Down

Talk Me Down by Victoria Dahl

What was this book about?

Molly Jennings returns to the small town Tumble Creek, Colorado. It doesn’t take long for her to run into her old crush Ben Lawson. Ben is now the sheriff of the town. Molly has always had a thing for Ben –but she was too young and his friends little sister to boot. This time things might be different.

Something keeps throwing Molly and Ben together. Weird and dangerous things are happening to Molly. Who could be doing it and why?

What did you think about the book?

This book was just fun. It kept me entertained and excited to keep reading. The characters are likeable. Their interactions with each other leave you wanting more. Yes there is sex. But while it plays a large part in the story – it isn’t everything that there is.

I would definitely read more Victoria Dahl books. Anyone who likes contemporary romances with an edge – this is the book for you. The story is great and it is definitely one of those books when you start you don’t want to stop.

Odd Mom Out

Odd Mom Out by Jane Porter

What was this book about?

Marta Zisser moved to Seattle because her mother was ill and a job opportunity came up. When the job fell through she opened her own ad business. It was tough balancing being a single mom and owning a business that was thriving.

Her 10 year old daughter Eva is like every girl. She has moved to a new town and wants to be accepted. She loved New York and everything it represented and this is nothing like it. She will do anything to become like one of the other girls.

So to her – her mom represents something bad. The other mom’s are concerned about what car you drive and what you wear. Her mother is more into being comfortable.

Can Marta find her place in Seattle society? Does that mean giving up everything she is? Can she find love when she is least looking for it?

What did you think about the book?

I have read all of Jane Porter’s books by now and for me this was the best one. I loved it. I loved the character of the mother and the daughter (and even the love interest). The mom especially for me was a great character. She was unusual, she fought the need to be like everyone else (for her own comfort an for her daughter), it hurt when her daughter acted like a normal teenager.

Even the romance for me was believable.

The Pagan Stone

The Pagan Stone by Nora Roberts

What was this book about?

For Gage, Fox, Cal, Quinn, Layla and Cybil it is almost the 7th of July. This means that the demons that have been haunting the Hollow for the last 21 years is coming and this time it is going to be an all out war.

They have each been preparing and trying to do their part in solving this mystery of sorts. How to defeat evil. Meanwhile relationships have been formed between all of them – they are brothers, sisters, and lovers.

The last holdout for love are Gage and Cybil. They are each used to being travelers and not staying in one place. They aren’t looking for long term relationships. They just want to help out their “family” so they will stay and fight with them against this evil. Can love rule the day?

What did you think about the book?

I enjoyed this series immensely. It is a combination classic love story – combo supernatural thriller. While I love Nora Roberts in general this is just another of her classic trilogies that she has had with a paranormal twist to.

Sometimes I am just not sure how she is going to close everything out in just one novel. But she definitely does it. I would love to get more of the characters in terms of a wrap up (because how can you not want to know about life after – when you have been reading about their lives for three books).

Line of Scrimmage

Line of Scrimmage by Marie Force

What was this book about?

Ryan Sanderson is about to lose his wife of several years. The divorce is just about to be final. So he decides to make a last minute play to keep her in his life. But it isn’t that easy for Susannah. She is ready to move on and is already engaged to old boyfriend Henry.

They have had a dramatic history together and Susannah has always felt as if Ryan has put football before her. Is she willing to let them try one more time? Can they trust each other with their past?

What did you think about the book?

I really enjoyed this book. In some ways it was a light hearted contemporary romance where two people who belong together did the best they could to make it happen. But add into that realistic twists – losing a child, an abusive boyfriend, family who doesn’t like the choices you made and you have a recipe for an interesting and fun romance.

Into the Flame

Into the Flame by Christina Dodd (Darkness Chosen Book 4)

What was this book about?

We have read the stories of Firebrand’s three brothers. Her great-great… grandfather made a pact with the devil that gave him and his progeny strength, powers and damned them all to hell. When her father found his love and started to break the curse of the devil it was up to his four sons to finish things. But they didn’t have four sons (or so they thought).

Firebrand has had a tough life knowing there were Varinski’s out there to get her at every turn. When she finally finds a man that she loves, Doug Black, and then finds out that he too is a Varinski she flees. Taking with her their unborn child (that he knows nothing about).

Doug just wants to find his family – as he was an abandoned child. He doesn’t understand how she could walk away from him like this. To finish the story of the Wilder’s Firebrand will have to seek him out and help the story come to a close.

What did you think about the book?

This series was great! Half man/half human with a pact with the devil. Only they and their loves can defeat evil and save their souls from hell. What a great plot arch! One thing I would note to people reading this and thinking about picking up the series. You don’t want to read this book till last. It is the perfect ending to the series.

I really enjoyed the family who is not really a 100 percent good but they know that their love is the most important thing. I thought it was great how all the parts fell together in this book. Every one played a role and was integral to how the plot moved forward.

So go out and READ IT!

Dark Curse

Dark Curse by Christine Feehan (Carpathian Novel)

What was this book about?

Lara Calladine, daughter of Razvan has a history that has forced her to remain quiet about her mage abilities. She was tortured as a small child by her father and grandfather and trusts very few. She also can’t handle the Carpathian part of her that requires her to drink blood. It is all a difficult living for her.

Then she meets Nicolas De La Cruz. He is her lifemate and immediately binds the two of them together. He was an edge – ready to give up his life – because he believed the day would never happen that he would find her. But for Nicolas who is used to being in charge and “manly” it is difficult for him to realize he cannot just claim Lara as his and all will be well. Her history makes that difficult.

It is a difficult time for the Carpathian people. They are dying out, their children are dying, it looks like things may be at a turning point – for the bad. Little do they know that Lara – being of Dragonseeker blood – holds the key to making things better for all of them. Will she help? Will she accept her lifemate?

What did you think about the book?

I love the Carpathian’s. They have everything a romance novel like this should have – people meant to be together, a complete and complex history and past, characters that reoccur so that you don’t lose your old friends. To me it is amazing the world that Christine Feehan has created. It is definitely more then I could have ever imagined.

So if you liked the other novels you must read this one. I love how we learn more about Razvan (through his daughter Lara). You learn more about the evil Xavier and the things he has done to exterminate the Carpathian race. I find the fact that he is the reason that Carpathians have had such a hard time bearing children as a great twist in the larger picture. Can you read one of these book on their own? Probably. I wouldn’t suggest it though – you get so much more out of reading them all!
