Well it is getting to be that time in October that we all get in the mood for Halloween. And I am ready for it!
As you can tell I read a lot of different kinds of books, and definitely seem to spend a lot of time reading about the supernatural and paranormal. But I need some suggestions on what I can read that will put me in the Halloween spirit!
So what do you think would be a great end of October read for me?

The Queen’s Husband
The Queen’s Husband by Jean Plaidy
What was this book about?
Victoria was only 18 when she became Queen of England. And she ruled for many years. One of the most interesting stories about Victoria is how she found her husband Prince Albert and their story of love. Albert was her cousin and was forced to deal with much of the intrigue any royal house would have.
Together they had nine children and did many things for the English people. Read it all here.
What did you think about the book?
If you ever liked the stories of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert you would love Jean Plaidy and this book. While giving you a great perspective on her life and Albert’s both before and after their marriage it also is not dry. You aren’t reading fact after fact after fact, at the same time you feel like this isn’t all made up. That it is an accurate reading of what was going on in their lives.
What genre would you consider this?
Historical Fiction

Turbulent Sea
Turbulent Sea by Christine Feehan (Drake Sisters Novel)
What was this book about?
Joley is one of seven sisters with special powers. She is now a world renowned singer and her band and herself are on tour. She met Ilya Prakenskii a year before and has been touched by their connection ever sense. It seems as if Ilya also has his own special gifts and one of those is getting in her head.
Joley doesn’t know if she can trust Ilya – he works for a Russian mobster as a bodyguard. But her heart seems to have already made the decision for her. But with everything going on around her and someone out to kill her – she needs to make sure she really should trust him.
What did you think about the book?
We have been seeing the buildup between Joley and Ilya through several of these other books and you finally are able to see their story. Of course they have a tumultuous love affair where Joley doesn’t know if she can trust a man that seems so dangerous and dark – even if he does have special powers like her and her sisters and he has saved her sisters life.
I like the Drake Sisters a lot. The thought of a family of seven sisters each with a special power (and the last with all their powers) fits right into the type of books that I love to read. They each can have their own personality, own dreams, but together family is more important then everything.
I don’t know what it was about this book (maybe the drama going on parallel where someone is trying to hurt Joley) but it was a bit harder for me to get into this book. I would have to admit of the 6 books that are out now – this was my least favorite.
But it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t suggest reading this series to someone. Overall Christine Feehan generally gives you what you want.

I Like It Like That
I Like It Like That by Cecily von Ziegesar
What was this book about?
Just like the tv show there is Gossip Girl someone who tells everyone else what is going on in everyone’s lives. They don’t know who she is or how she knows these things.
Keep her surrounded by a group of wealthy high class kids who are interested in pursuing their art, taking lots of drugs, hooking up and you have the plot.
In this book Blair is interested in getting away from her mother (who is pregnant) and brothers, so she decides to go skiing with Serena. And Serena’s hot older brother Eric. Is Blair ready to give it up?
Nate and his rehab girlfriend Georgina are also there and Nate can’t help but compare Georgina to Blair and Serena. Is he with the right girl?
What did you think about the book?
The only fair thing is to start with why I even put this on my book list. I think everyone has heard of gossip girl either from magazines, internet, or TV. I had no interest in watching the show for quite a while. But when the summer got to be long and dry with no new tv to watch I gave in. (DVR is great but it does mean that you don’t have to catch up with any shows that you missed – you just don’t miss any!)
So about two months ago I started watching Gossip Girl on TV. And I liked it. It was fun, young, interesting and I thought – why did I wait so long to watch this. When I found out that it was based on the books I decided to go out and try one. And since this is the one I came across I started here.
And it wasn’t that the book was bad – it was ok – it was more that I had expectations and characters set in my mind from the TV show and the book were sometimes very, very different. Be it physical, where they fit in the family life, etc. And it was just hard to get passed what I imagined for them with the TV show and the book.
If I had read the books first I might have loved them. If the characters had different names – like they have different temperament, lives, etc. I probably would have been ok with it. But it was just hard.

The Book of Scandal
The Book of Scandal by Julia London
What was this book about?
Nathan Grey and his wife Evelyn have been separated since the death of their son drove them apart. Unable to deal with their misery together they found ways of dealing with it apart. For Evelyn that meant returning to London and becoming a ladies maid for one of the princesses. But it is difficult for Evelyn to reject the kindling of a new romance.
But Nathan is brought back to Evelyn when he discovers her name could be listed in the “Book of Scandal”. The Princess of Whales and the Prince have been estranged for years and it has come to her knowledge that she can provide some sort of examples of his debauchery through this book.
Evelyn does not want to return home a it is full of memories. But Nathan is going to get her back there if it means he has to kidnap her. He will not let his name or hers be brought into the kind of scandal that it will inevitably bring by letting her stay in London.
What did you think about the book?
A touch of history, albeit not all true and things moved around to make things work, is the most exciting part of this book. It was well written and it wasn’t that I didn’t like th story – I just couldn’t get into it. I think the one thing it did make me want to do – is more history reading on that point in time.

Last Kiss
Last Kiss by Luane Rice
What was this book about?
Teenager Charlie Rice goes to New York for school and never returns. Instead he is killed by what seems to be a random mugging. He leaves so many behind that are morning him and that are unable to move on with the feelings of randomness associated with his unexpected murder. Those he leaves behind are desperate to find out what really happened and why.
There is his single mother Sheridan. Who was a famous singer and songwriter – but now that her son has died her heart is just not in it. She has been burned by several romances and the one thing she had been living for was the joy her son brought her.
Charlie’s girlfriend – the love of his life – Nell Kilvert. They grew up together and she knew they would always be together. His absence has broken her heart and she just can’t understand why she is being punished like this. Her (almost) step-mother Stevie has seen both grow up and feels like they were her children. How can she help Nell deal with the grief?
Gavin Dawson has been invited by Nell to investigate what really happened to Charlie. But he has his own connection to Hubbard’s Point, Connecticut. He once was the sould mate of Sheridan. But youth and their own pain drove them apart. Can he get another chance at this love?
What did you think about the book?
Where there is heartache and pain there can also be love and happiness. Losing someone is never easy – whether it is a husband or wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, best friend, or child there is pain for everyone. You fight a battle daily with how you wish things had been, how you wish they were there.
Time passes and your feelings begin to change – get a little less sharp – but never go away. But for all this pain the fact that you can feel also opens you up for life’s little happinesses. The joy of friendship. The joy of finding a love. The joy of having a child. The joy of sharing your gift (painting, singing, writing).
To me that was what this book was about. It was about how life is full of joy and happiness, guilt, pain and misery. Life isn’t perfect. But even the most painful things can have a silver lining.
If you are looking for something that will make you feel upbeat. I do not know if this is a book that will do it. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it definitely shows it to you.

The Fruit of My Lipstick
The Fruit of My Lipstick by Shelley Adina (An All About Us Novel)
What was this book about?
Gillian Chang is a student at a prestigious boarding school. She is an overachiever who knows to fit in with her family it is important that she gets good grades, does well in school, treats her family with respect and doesn’t have a boyfriend.
But it seems that fate is going to be kind to (or is it) when school hottie and brainiac Lucas Hayes wants to go out with her. He is busy with trying to be a scholar and has little patience at times but he loves her- right?
Meanwhile someone at the school is selling exams to the other students. If the school doesn’t find out who it is they will all fail. Could it be Gillian? One of her friends? Who could be the culprit?
Is Lucas the right man for her or are her friends just jealous of their relationship?
What did you think about the book?
This was a book that was hard for me to read. I totally got the whole perspective of trying had to be something you are not to impress a guy. And that when you step back and look at a situation (which is essentially what you are doing when you read a book) that the guy can be really good for you or really bad for you.
I think I just didn’t see the relationship between the mini-arcs of the story. There was the part about faith and how faith is used in your everyday life. How some charecters had it and others were looking for how it fit into their life. Then there was the boyfriend who is not very nice arc. How the main character changes who she is so that she can have him love her more. Then the friendship arc (which touches on the boyfriend arc in that she abandons a relationship with her friends for him). Lastly is the someone in school is cheating on exams and selling them so we should find him or her. It all was just too much. Some I would like to have had expanded on – others totally ignored.

Mommy Tracked
Mommy Tracked by Whitney Gaskell
What was this book about?
Four mom’s each with a different perspective on their lives and a desire to have more of what someone else has.
Anna, is a divorced mother of a two year old boy. Her relationship with her ex is iffy at most considering they only got married because she was pregnant. She is trying to be a career mom and doesn’t know if she really is ready to date again. Is she?
Chloe is new to the group and suffers from anxiety of not being good enough. She is just about to have her first child and has expectations for how this is going to affect her life (and her husbands life) can they live up to all these expectations?
Juliet is a lawyer who is desperate to become partner. And she has twin girls who have had a “stay at home daddy” their whole lives. This switch on the conventional stay at home mom/dad works is starting to cause havoc in their lives. Is having a high powered and time consuming career more important then seeing her childrens’ firsts. Or is it more of a problem with being the moneymaker when dealing with her husband.
Grace is a stay at home mother who is great at it. She knows it – her three children love her and she dedicates her life to them. But she can’t help but feel insecure about her relationship with them and her husband. Is she good enough, thin enough? She sure doesn’t think so and can’t help but compare herself to everyone. That probably isn’t a good thing for anyone.
What did you think about the book?
I really liked this book being told from a perspective of many different kinds of roles that mothers take. Being a parent isn’t always what you think it will be. Let alone trying to juggle being a parent with your relationship with your husband or boyfriend. It is a tough road.
At the same time there are all sorts of rewards – which is why people do it. And I felt this non-judgemental book showed many of them. The author doesn’t try to make it seem like one mother is doing a better job then the other because of the choices that she made to work/not work. She just shows the emotional pitfalls in each of them.
I would feel honored to be friends with this group of four women. They are just my style.

The Darkest Pleasure
The Darkest Pleasure by Gena Showalter (Lords of the Underworld Book 3)
What was this book about?
Reyes cannot fight his attraction to Danika Ford. The minute he saw her he felt this need to protect her. But he is both Reyes and the demon of Pain and he doesn’t want her innocence to be destroyed by him and his need to hurt himself.
Danika knows that Reyes and his friends kidnapped her family and has threatened to kill them. She is on the run and so are they. She has been separated from all that she loved because of him. So how can she trust him? How can she give in to her attraction to him?
What Danika doesn’t know is that she is a part of the Lords of the Underworld and if she doesn’t give in to them there are others out there who would hurt her and her family. It is a race to see who gets to her first and can she figure out why all these people are after her?
What did you think about the book?
I was waiting for this book ever since the first book. They have been foreshadowing a relationship between Reyes and Danika ever since then. And finally my hopes have been realized.
Things make sense now – why the gods sent Aeron after her to kill her and her family. What part she plays in the larger picture.
Would I recommend you start with this book in the series? No – I would definitely read this series beginning to end. You could probably catch up by starting here but you would lose some of the nuances of their relationship and why it is so hard for them to be together.

Some Like it Wicked by Teresa Medeiros
What was this book about?
Catriona Kincaid fell in love with Simon Wescott when she was just a teen. She has spent years following his every deed. So when she decides she needs to return back to her native Scotland to find her brother and save them from an evil man she turns to Simon.

Wicked Pleasure
Wicked Pleasure by Nina Bangs
What was this book about?
Kim Vaughn is part of a demon hunting family. She has always been the one in her family who really didn’t want to fight demons. She wanted a normal life and a normal family. Which is part of the reason she picked the defective Fo as her demon detector. Kim travels to the Castle of Dark Dreams for a “normal” job and instead finds out she is surrounded by otherworldly creatures.
Brynn McNair is cursed with the fact that if he spends an hour with a woman – he must bend to her will and sleep with her (if she wants it). He doesn’t know what he is – demon or not – he just knows that he has lived with this forever and doesn’t enjoy it. When he is attracted to Kim even without the curse he can’t believe it. Can he convince her he is the one for her before she tries to kill the demon him!
What did you think about the book?
I enjoyed this book. I have read others in the series and found this one to fit right in. I finally was able to meet Fo and Gabriel and find out how those two little devices found each other. They seem to do the same thing in almost every books – where they have some sort of evil to fight. But in general that does nothing to the integrity of the story.

They seem to do the same thing in almost every books – where they have some sort of evil to fight. But in general that does nothing to the integrity of the story.

Return to Summerhouse
Return to Summerhouse by Jude Deveraux
What was this book about?
Madame Zoya and her traveling back in time has returned. This time her three women are – Amy – who has been despondent since she suffered a miscarriage a few months before, Faith – a widow who was aged by the care of her invalid husband and always wondered what happened to the other boy she has always loved, and Zoe – who was in a car accident and doesn’t know why it seems that everyone hates her in her town.
The trio is sent back to fulfill something Amy needs to do in the distant past (the 1800s) and then sent on their own missions to change the things in their lives they always wished had been changed.
What did you think about the book?
In some ways I liked this book more then the first book “Summerhouse” and in other ways I found it more confusing. The parts I enjoyed were that there wasn’t a whole 2/3rds of the book talking about how sucky the people in its lives were. They had mysteries to solve and things to do.
Things I didn’t like was the time travel part. While it was interesting I just don’t see how it works. Was Amy alive in both times for the whole lifetime? If she was meant to be with him why didn’t they “be together”. I mean I appreciate that she loves her husband and her children – but I feel bad for the guy. He loves her. She has been in his life forever. She loves him.. It was all just a bit weird.

Cry Wolf
Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs (An Alpha and Omega Novel)
What was this book about?
Anna was turned into a werewolf by a pack of power hungry werewolves. She is special though – an omega. With powers that make her the desire of many packs. She doesn’t know it though and has spent years being tortured.
She then meets Charles Cornick. He makes her feel things she has never felt before. He is his fathers enforcer and a werewolf as well (oh yeah and his dad is the alpha). Then this book starts.
Charles has brought Anna home with him. She is just starting to learn to trust him and herself and has no idea what her powers are or how to live in a normal pack setting. She is trying to learn this when some mysterious deaths begin to happen in the mountains. She and Charles set out to find out what is happening and stop more people from being killed or hurt.
What did you think about the book?
I hadn’t read any books about Anna before – so at the beginning I felt left out. I didn’t know what an Omega was. I didn’t know the drama with her previous pack at all. I just was running to catch up.
Once things picked up and it began to tell me a little more (but still not enough) I felt better. I just wasn’t sure if this was the first book in this series or the 2nd . Overall I liked it and would keep reading the series – but I would suggest if there was a 1st book that you read that one first.
