Book Review: Lords of Misrule

Lords of Misrule by Rachel Caine

Thoughts: Don’t even attempt to start this series with this book. I think you would be so confused you wouldn’t know what to do. This isn’t my favorite book in this series – but I am hooked and want to see where things end up. So I am stuck continuing. Overall the series is an interesting one. A town where it is run by vampires. Which in itself isn’t a good thing but at least they follow the rules. Then bring in an outside vampire who wants to take it all over and the rules go out the window.

The series is interesting but it really requires you to remember a lot of what happened in previous books in order to get into the story and enjoy it.

Book Review: Evermore

Evermore by Alyson Noel

Thoughts:
Ever since she was in an accident that left all of her family dead Ever Bloom has been able to see dead people and know what has been going on in people’s lives. And that leads to an interesting book. You find out about Damen this new kid at her school who she doesn’t really know what is going on with.

I really liked this book and plan on following this series for a while. I thought it was a great book in another Teen Vampire Series (that has seemed to become all the rage). It is different. It deals with soul mates (which I think teens really enjoy – knowing that someone is out there for you and only you). And the power that Ever has but doesn’t know it is spectacular. I can’t wait to see where this one leads us.

Book Review: Dark Slayer

Dark Slayer by Christine Feehan


Thoughts: I love the Carpathian books and wish they came out more often. It is a combination of a story about two people who fall in love and are soul mates and the overall story of what is happening to that race of people. In fact over time it seems like more and more of the story has to do with the overarching story then the smaller story of just their love story.

In this case I would probably start with an earlier book in the series then this one. But if you know anything about the Carpathians – I would definitely pick it up and read it.

Book Review: Burning Wild

Burning Wild by Christine Feehan

Description: Jake Bannaconni is not a normal man. He has had a horrible childhood that has scarred him in ways that he never could have imagined. He trusts no one – not even his family. And with good reason. When he meets Emma Reynolds he knows she must be in his life no matter what. So he will stop at nothing to make that happen.

But the two have trust issues. And Jake has a large secret that a normal person won’t be able to handle.


Thoughts: More than a normal paranormal romance it has a touch of erotica. It is a hot romance that keeps you entertained. You feel for him in terms of his family and you want Emma to make him happy. You understand her need to not ruin their relationship as his child is her child and hers is his.

I love Christine Feehan but even more I like her romances. She gives them to you with unique stories. Usually they have had rough childhood. And their romancec with someone else saves them.

Book Review: Hidden Currents

Hidden Currents by Christine Feehan

Description:Being the 7th daughter of a 7th daughter means your fate has been written out for you – you will have 7 daughters of your own. That may be hard for you to understand, try finding the man that you are fated to and having him understand. That is what happens to the youngest sister Elle Drake and her love Sherriff Jackson Deveau. So Elle goes out into the real world trying to help people by spying. When she comes across a man so evil no one can destroy him and he will stop at nothing to have Elle.

Elle’s sisters aren’t going to let anyone have her. They and Jackson will do whatever it takes (including putting all their powers together) to get her back to their family. But that is only the first step – they must put her back together – and stop the evil that is coming for her!

Thoughts: This is the darkest book of the Drake Sister’s series. I was sad to see them end – but it was nice to see everyone happy. I wouldn’t suggest this for the faint of heart. Elle lives through a very rough time (rape, beatings, emotional and physical abuse) and comes out the end stronger because of it. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t take its toll on her. She is lucky that she has a strong family behind her.

Despite that good will overcome evil once again. Sometimes the struggle and pain make the victory all the more rewarding.

City of Souls (The Fourth Sign of the Zodiac) by Vicki Pettersson

Description:Olivia/Joanna Archer is the Kairos and in the last book something she had done had screwed the fight between good and evil. The Shadow’s were taking over and making every space for the good – no longer safe. Joanna must do whatever it takes to put the two sides back on even footing.

Thoughts: I have enjoyed this series and will have to pass it on to others for a recommendation. I don’t know if it is over or not with this book (it could be the end) and if so I am sad because the plot and all that goes with it has been really interesting and different.

Book Review: Fragile Eternity

Fragile Eternity (Sequel to Wicked Lovely) by Melissa Marr

Description: Aislinn is queen and that means that she has to spend time with her faerie king - Keenan. But her mortail love Seth is having problems dealing with Aislinn's double life. She wants to hate Keenan but she can't. Both for her people and just in general.

Can Seth figure out how to fit in her world without destroying himself? Is it worth it to be part of Aislinn's world?

Thoughts: Do I love this series? I don't know. For me at times it seems a bit slow. In the end though I end up happy with how things have progressed and want to keep reading. Everyone in this books seems to want to be with someone that they shouldn't. Whether it is romanticly or just because. And while that is good - I just don't see where it is all leading. There isn't really an overarching plotline other than the need to see where all these relationships are leading and moving together.

Again something I would continue reading (at least for a while). But not something I put on the top of my can't wait for list.

Book Review: The Awakening

The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong

Description:Chloe has been captured by the Edison Group. She wants to know why they seem to be after her and her friends with special abilities. (Chloe can raise the dead and speak to ghosts - she is a necromancer). Her getting captured means two things - an opportunity to find out what is really going on and an opportunity to get back and save her friends.

Simon has always liked Chloe and he is protected by his werewolf brother Derek. Derek seems to not appreciate Chloe but will do anything to protect her. Add to that the complication of someone who seems like a friend who isn't and maybe someone who doesn't seem like a friend truely being one.

They need to escape the Edison Group and stay together. But is that possible? Why are they really here?


Thoughts: I had forgotten how much I liked this series until I picked up this book and started reading. The characters are great and not your normal run of the mill story line. I have my very own suspicions as to who is supposed to end up with who. Who is good and who is bad. And all of those kinda thoughts show me what a good book that this is.

It definitely is appropriate for teens. Other than the paranormal twist there is no sex - some limited violence (but not graphic).

In fact I like this teen series even better than Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series. And I always thought that was good.

Book Review: Kiss of a Demon King

Kiss of a Demon King by Kresley Cole

Description: Sabine is the Sorceress of Illusions. She has been trapped by her brother (who wants more from her than she is willing to give) and knows her fate is to be the mate of Demon King. So when she gets the chance to meet her fate - she captures the Demon King in order to impregnate herself and finally have the power she always wanted.

The Demon King is a good man - who wants to have the perfect mate. She must be a wonderful Queen who would be good for his people. The last thing he wants is Sabine - who is the sister of his enemy. (And a great big liar)

Thoughts: This is the first book that I read in this series and i enjoyed it. The idea that a Demon King could be good and that Sabine doesn't have to be truly good to be a good queen and person is interesting. You can't help but root for them to be together. I will definitely be picking up the other books in the series. I will also say it wasn't difficult to start where I was - in terms of I would have liked to know more but it was fine knowing what I did know in terms of what was going on.

Book Review: Night of the Loving Dead

Night of the Loving Dead by Casey Daniels

Description: Pepper Daniel's can see ghosts. Which is great considering she works in a cemetery. But when Pepper ends up in Chicago on a business trip the last thing she wants to do is solve another murder. But when a ghost asks her for help she has learned that the last thing she should do is ignore them.

What really seems strange to Pepper is this ghost's feelings for Dan Callahan. The ghost Madeline worked with Dan and seems to want Pepper to help save him. But from what? Is Madeline telling Pepper the whole truth? Can Pepper figure it all out in time?

Thoughts: I was ready to love this book. I had really enjoyed several others that were in similar themes and thought this would be a great addition to my reading list. Sadly, while this was good, it wasn't good enough to make me want to go back in the series and read the books that I had missed. It wasn't good enough for me to want to put it on my don't dare miss this book list. It was just ok.

I didn't appreciate the ghost Madeline or the history that Dan has with Pepper. I didn't know why Pepper didn't see that Quinn seemed to want something more from her. I jsut didn't get it. And maybe I would have if this was a series I had started from in the beginning.

But as I said it wasn't bad. The plot moved forward at a decent pace. The idea of a girl who falls and hits her head and now can see and communicate with ghosts is interesting. It has a lot of promise - but for me this book wasn't all I wanted it to be.

Book Review: Curse the Dawn

Curse the Dawn by Karen Chance

Description: Cassie Palmer is Pythia. That should bring power and rewards. Instead it brings death threat after death threat. The Council that should be accepting her is upset that she isn't under their power. The god that created Pythia's is mad at her and wants his power back (and to destroy the world). And Cassie doesn't know what to do with her power. What is she to do.

Cassie must learn to take her power under control and do soemthing with it if she wants to survive let alone survive until the end of the day.

Thoughts: This book has a very different tone then another book I read recently but it had the same problem. I like the series. But the book just didn't move forward enough for me. Am I asking to much? It isn't so bad (like some books I have read) where I feel like someone was pushing the author to make something so they did and no one is really happy with it. They are interesting, they progress the story forward, but there isn't enough meat in the story to make me happy. And while with some books it is because I feel like I am demanding (and that is why I want more) - I feel it is just that sometimes there are books that have to be more filler then meat - and that is so that when they get to the next book all the details have been set for something spectacular. Maybe I am being optimistic.

Cassie does confront Apollo. There is a lot going on in terms of little plots. But there is so much going on there is no big focus of the story.

Book Review: City of Glass

City of Glass by Cassandra Clare (The Mortal Instruments)

Description: Clary has found out that her mother and her life isn't what she always believed it to be. She is a Shadowhunter with a special power. She can create new ruins with her stele. This allows her to fight the evil man that has put her mother in a coma and is trying to distroy the world - her father.

Her father started out being a good person but when his first child was born he changed. He became evil. And he took his son with him. Jace has always believed that he is evil and he is doing all he can to not be like that. Add to that his attraction for his newly found sister Clary and he can't help but thing that there is a possiblity that he cannot be good.

Valentine is now ready to declare war on all of the Glass City. The Shadowhunters cannot stop him by themselves. Can they trust Clary and Jace? What about the werewolves, vampires, and warlocks? Can they all learn to work together before Valentine wipes them all out?


Thoughts: I enjoyed this series when it first started out. I had no idea it was only going to be a trilogy - until I got to this book. Personally I would have liked to see it go on a little longer (because I both liked the series as well as because I thought there was so much thrown into the last book that I feel like things may have been a little rushed).

Overall though the series was a good series and I would recommend any of the other books as well - City of Ashes and City of Bones though it really is one of those series that I recommend starting at the beginning.

I don't want to ruin anything but I really started to wonder in this book about the relationship between Jace and Clary. I really didn't think at any point in this book that they could be brother and sister like we were led to believe. I mean they scream - soul mates. Some may feel that the way this ended was a good thing while others may feel like the ending in that particular matter was a bit of a cop out.

As a quick note - even though I think that it is almost nothing like the Harry Potter series, something about this last book reminded me of it. Maybe it was the big battle, maybe it was the evil guy, I just don't know - but it was interesting.

Another thing that I thought a good thing in this book is while it is definitely aimed at teens - other then violence there really is no sex or any sort of act that would be inappropriate. I even loved the way they inserted (even earlier in the series) a gay character who had to come out to his parents. Everyone felt the same about him- even though it was a hard and courageous thing to do.
